We wanted to know a little bit more about what is it to be a Communication Manager, so we asked Nadia from Tweek Tv
Q: How would you describe what you do to a grandmother?
Nadia : Haha. Grandma, I am doing all the talking and writing stuff for a young TV company. We have created a TV Guide for the future generation.
Q: What did you want to become when you were a kid?
Several things, the one that my parents keep on telling me about is: Dog hairdresser.
And lawyer and crime novelist and so on.
Q: Did you study? If so, what? Was studying necessary for this job?
I have a B.A in International Relations and M.A in Intercultural Conflict Management. I would say Conflict Management is necessary for all sorts of jobs..
Q: Did you have any prior work experience? If so, what?
I have my own jewellery business on the side and worked as an intern in Press departments for several NGOs.
Q. What would be the best preparation for someone looking to do your job? How did you get a foot in the door?
Have a wide network of Tech people, especially journalists and bloggers. I did not really have that before, but knew a lot of people in the startup scene that helped me getting to know influential minds. The best advice nowdays really is: to establish, deepen and keep relationsships and thus networks alive.
Q: What do you think was it that made the company hire you? Did you have a killer line in your application?
I would say it was mainly my eagerness to learn and pitch in. Startup life is not like another job, you dont usually work on the one task that you actually applied for. You need to be open to all sorts of assignments. I guess I am open to that, because I am willing to learn and try new stuff.
Q: What do you love about this job? What makes you get out of bed every morning?
The team, we have a really nice, fun team of super smart people. I like seeing them, I love learning from them and it just fun to see how we all kind grow together. My favorite parts of the day are always the meetings, because you can sit together, brainstorm and just feel like the product is developing further.
Q: What is the worst part about your job?
To always have some sense of uncertainty, since this areas is so new for me I do a lot of mistakes, of course that is also fine, because this is the way anyone learns. But still sometimes I wish I would be a professional already ;)
Q: What was your greatest work day so far?
To be honest, our launch in London was great, it was exciting, super stressful and just fun!
Q: How do you see your job in 10 years?
I work in the startup world. No idea what will happen in the next 10 years. That is the whole fun behind it, everything can happen!
Q: What does your typical work day look like?
I usually start around 10 with emails and stats and then think about the blog content, check the press for Social TV articles, try to keep in touch with bloggers and plan our next PR or marketing points.
Q: How much % of your time (Total = 100%) do you spend doing the following:
a. email : 40%
b) other computer work : 40%
b) telephone : 1%
c) office meetings : 9%
d) out of the office: should be 30%, but right now: 10%
Q: Could you do your job remotely or is office presence important?
Most of the times I could work out of the office, but often it is just easier to be here in case you need to discuss with the other team members.
Q: What characteristics of a company culture do you find most important?
Open and honest communication, team spirit and respect. Tweek certainly combines all that.
Q: If you could change one thing in your company, what would it be?
A couple of weeks ago, I would have probably said: the women ration, but this has changes, we are now 3 women and 8 guys. Jej. I would probably change our door policy, it is just ringing all the time and the sound is kind of disturbing :)
Q: What are your favorite qualities in a boss?
Tone of voice, both in emails and personal. I think it is super imporant that the leader of a team knows how to talk to the team. He/she needs to be friendly and respectful, but still able to put his/her foot down. I think it difficult for most people to not become too personal in discussions etc. and that is something a good boss must be a master in. It is kind of like a relationship, if you want something from another person you need to be able to find the right diplomatic tone in order to be heard!
Q: What is your idea of happiness?
Haha. What a question, who knows!? I would regard myself happy in a work space, when I am under a fair amount of pressure and stress, I do not like the slow times when you are waiting for something to happen so you can start your own tasks, those are the worst. I am happy when I have my pile of things to do and I can see a result at the end of the pile.
Q: Which skill would you love to learn?
Coding. I would really like to learn some basic coding, it makes you independent. I am quite good in just researching stuff and then trying it out, but of course it always takes me a lot longer to change the custom html of tumblr than it would, if I could clearly read the code myself.
Q: Who would you like to go for a coffee with and why?
Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, who started her own company by learning everything herself and starting from absolut scratch. I think she is definetly a role model for a lot of young women out there, actually not only women, she build her dream with her own hands.
Q: If you did not what you did, what would you dream of doing instead?
I am happy at the moment, so right now I would like to do anything else. Generally my dream is to go back into the social sector, I mean international organizations, NGOs etc. One of my dreams always was to have my own little photo project between Tanzania and Berlin (can’t tell you more right now ;)).
Q: What do you like best about Berlin?
The people and the atmosphere. I have been living here for about 3.5 months and initially only came for a 6 months internship…I just didn’t want to leave anymore, because life in Berlin seems so much nicer than anywhere else. People are relaxed, rents are low and the summers are amazing.
Q: Which places do you like to hangout at?
Def. not St. Oberholz at least not during my personal time :) I like to hang out at the Kanal in Kreuzberg or at the beautiful lakes surrounding Berlin
Q: If it wasn’t Berlin, where would you like to live?
Somewhere close to the ocean. Californa, South Africa.
Q: What is your favorite life motto?
Et het noch immer jot jejange! Which is Kölsch (German Slang from Cologne) and basically means ‘everything has always worked out’.
